KRG Education Minister finds support on European visit
The Kurdistan Regional Government's (KRG) Education Minister Dr Dilshad Abdulrahman Mohammed last week in Europe met Austrian, German and UN education experts to share ideas on reforms to Kurdistan's education system.
Following the productive meetings Dr Abdulrahman said, "We have a lot more in common with the European countries that we visited than was first thought. Such areas include the challenge of IT and how to successfully integrate it into schools, as well as creating the correct balance between a vocational and academic education necessary for creating a skilled workforce. By contrast, many experts commented on the challenges and opportunities in Kurdistan with its large student population, as opposed to Europe which is facing the challenge of an increasingly aged population."
At UNESCO's International Bureau of Education in Geneva, the Minister took part in a meeting to start devising a new school curriculum for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. If successful, the project proposal will lay the foundations for devising a comprehensive school curriculum for Iraq which will include agreed variations for the Kurdistan Region. Dr Abdulrahman was joined by representatives from the Iraqi federal Education Ministry, the Head of the UNESCO Office for Iraq Mr Mohammed Djelid, and curriculum development experts from Germany.
